Newsletter No 5, October 2018 [DOWNLOAD HERE]

We're delighted to announce that the Aald Skül property now belongs to CDCN! The transfer was completed on the 16th October. CDCN paid £4.00 for it. We'd like to thank all who have helped to bring this about; especially Paul Rutherford who has been our solicitor, and Judith Fenton (Community Involvement and Development Officer of the SICs Community Planning and Development Department) who has given us a great deal of help with all aspects of this process.

Employment of development worker:

We have been advertising the post of development worker for a couple of weeks now; we have four applicants, with another nine people who have requested a job description.

Grants:

We won the grants that we applied for from LEADER and the SIC's Economic Development Fund. These grants totalled £24,520.57 which will help top-up the development worker's salary and fund a wide range of initial expenses and running costs.

Building work:

We selected Malcolmson Architects to lead our design team. They prepared plans for redeveloping the Victorian building and repairing the hut buildings. Both planning permission and a building warrant have been applied for. They have also invited a number of builders to quote for the work.

The Victorian building will house an office for the development worker, and an ongoing home for the Nesting Local History Group.

The huts will house the Scrap-store and provide additional office space that we can rent out.

Other news:

  • We're looking at the possibility of providing the gym shortly, as part of the current building works. It would be housed in the west end of the huts and would be a quality gym with both strength and cardio equipment; however, providing this at this stage is very much dependent on what grant aid we can find.

  • The Scrap-store is still doing well, raising an average of £140 a week this year. The total raised by the Scrap-store is now over £13,000! Many thanks to all who have supported us; your donations are essential to the continued success of the group, and we hope to see all you bargain hunters again soon.

  • We are currently approaching various funding bodies for grants to pay for the proposed building work.

We will issue another newsletter in a few months’ time if all goes well.
