Community Development Company of Nesting CDCN
Newsletter No 2, February 2017 [DOWNLOAD HERE]
Here, in our second Newsletter, we'll tell you how we've progressed over the winter, and reveal some of our findings from the survey that's in progress!
Scrap Store news:
We continue to be well supported by the Nesting and the wider Shetland community; thank you to all who contribute with their donations of items, and their custom. Thank you, as well, to those who give their time to help run it.
We're raising about £100 a week with the Scrap Store; our total raised including donations is now well over £2400.
We hope to be able to open every Sunday afternoon over the summer—so please keep your donations of stuff coming!
Survey results:
Although we have not yet finished our door-to-door survey, we have nearly completed South Nesting, done most of the Girlsta area, and some of North Nesting.
Sorry if we haven't caught you in; if you've been missed, then please fill in a survey at the Skellister Stores, or online at the CDCN Facebook page.
We've counted up the results we have so far, and we find that: 97 people are interested in a gym, 41 in an allotment, 43 in a music-practise space, 60 in using a workshop, 19 in business start-up space, 36 in outside storage, 32 in a 3D printer, 15 in document storage, 46 in childcare, and 65 in joining our group!
Other news:
We are attempting to take on a consultant to write the business plan and assist with getting grants, we hope to get a grant to pay for his/her time; see if we succeeded in the next Newsletter!
To celebrate our first birthday we thought we'd put something back into the community; the idea we came up with was to reinstate the fallen, or ready-to-fall, headstones in the local cemeteries. We talked this over with the Council’s burials’ department, and received their consent to proceed. In the past they would have done this themselves, but with budget cutbacks they won't be able to get to it for some time. To do the work we have solicited the help of local man Andy Armstrong who works as a grave-digger and is keen to help with this in his spare time; we lend him assistance where needed. So far we've done much of what we intend to do in the South Nesting yard and we'll be moving on to Laxfirth next; the yard at Kirkabister is in good shape and not requiring attention at this time.
